Ümit Poslu: ‘A good ERP system provides the basis for innovation’

Few people would be as at home in Microsoft Dynamics as Ümit Poslu – for a decade already, ERP systems have been central to his work. He now applies his extensive knowledge and experience to the benefit of KPMG customers, having joined the Microsoft Enterprise Solutions team a year ago. What makes working on ERP projects so enjoyable? And how did his first year at KPMG go? We asked Ümit.

Digital Transformation

Buzzwords, you can’t get away from them, they keep buzzing around your ears in the digital world of business: from artificial intelligence to augmented reality, from machine learning to big data, and from Internet of Things to the cloud.

These are all promising technologies – but you first need to get the basis sorted out if you want to benefit from them. In a digital environment, basis means the enterprise resource planning – or ERP – system.

“Companies are often impatient to get more value out of data and make the most of the potential of technologies like AI, robotics, and the cloud,” says Ümit Poslu. “What they tend to forget is that this crucial basis – an optimally functioning ERP system – is essential before you can make the technological leap forward.”

Many customers, one system

Ümit has been working for about 10 years on optimizing the basis. At his previous employers, Ümit worked as (senior) ERP consultant, helping loads of clients move ahead.

“What’s nice about implementing ERP projects is the variety of different companies and industries,” he recalls of his years in the field. “I was for instance involved in ERP implementations at care and teaching institutions, building, trade and production companies, but also companies in retail, for example. This diversity made every project a bit different.”

Ümit also enjoys working together on digital innovation. “One of the most exciting implementations was an international roll-out in more than fifteen countries, where the implementation of a blueprint was rolled out simultaneously in Belgium, Germany and Spain. The various countries and cultures were noticeable in this project, which made it a really enjoyable experience for me.”

Besides the diversity of assignments, there was one constant: he focused throughout on Microsoft Dynamics, the ERP system of the eponymous American technology giant.

Delivering an end-to-end ERP service

Ümit has now been working for a year as Business Transformation Microsoft Manager in the KPMG team. The team assists customers with almost any possible issues regarding the Microsoft ERP system.

And at the same time, offers an end-to-end ERP service. From optimization and implementation to strategy. Along the way, we sort our clients’ troubles out with the right knowledge and experience for an ERP system that works optimally.

The team also advises independently on the choice of packages and modules. Colleagues help with the standardization of processes, work on strategic issues, and provide support in the optimization and overhaul of IT systems and transformation to the cloud.

45 consultants, 12 nationalities

The Microsoft Enterprise Solutions team counts about 45 consultants, which makes for a very diverse group of people. There are 12 different nationalities in the team. Ümit notices how this diversity contributes to the value that they deliver to customers.

“It stimulates renewal, creativity, and knowledge in the team. Working with colleagues from a different nationality and getting to know each other also ensures good personal growth. And besides, the diversity helps in international projects as well as internally in KPMG, since we have a very international focus at KPMG.”

Keep growing

Ümit looks back on a more than successful first year at KPMG. “It’s a fantastic company to work for. We have lot of knowledge and experience in our team, and there’s always someone who’s prepared to help you.”

In addition, the Enterprise Solutions department offers you lots of ways to grow further. “We work with the latest technologies, and there’s always room for acquiring specialized knowledge.”

“There are many possibilities to specialize on various fronts, get to know different companies, and grow professionally,” he explains. “Internally, KPMG also offers a wide variety of learning and growth opportunities.”

“Challenging assignments, a fun team, and a steep learning curve – what more do you want?”
